OVERVIEW

The steady increase in the introduction and spread of non-native invasive species worldwide and the resulting detrimental effects on native ecosystems have incited the development of decision-support tools to inform decision-makers and environmental managers of the associated risks. This is necessary to inform policy and management decisions to protect native aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems, and ultimately formulate rehabilitation and restoration strategies. As part of the risk analysis process applied to the environmental sciences, risk screening is the first step that aims to identify those non-native species likely to carry a higher risk of invasiveness, which would then be subject to risk assessment – the second step in risk analysis followed by risk management and communication (the third and final step). The Aquatic Species Invasiveness Screening Kit (AS-ISK) is currently by far the most widely used electronic decision-support tool for screening non-native aquatic species, with the Terrestrial Animal Species Invasiveness Screening Kit (TAS-ISK) and the Terrestrial Plant Species Invasiveness Screening Kit (TPS-ISK), respectively for screening non-native terrestrial animals and plants, having been recently released. This ISK family of toolkits consists of fully-fledged Microsoft Excel applications with a powerful and user-friendly graphical user interface, which is available in 31 languages. Adoption and employment of these electronic second-generation Weed Risk Assessment-type decision-support tools is crucial to inform government strategies aimed at preventing or mitigating the detrimental effects of non-native species.

AIMS OF THE COURSE

To provide both scientists and managers involved in the field of invasion biology with all background knowledge and skills necessary for conducting a full and scientifically defensible risk screening of the non-native species under study so as to inform government bodies about the best strategies to manage non-native invasive species.

INSTRUCTOR

Dr Lorenzo Vilizzi has a PhD in Aquatic Sciences and is currently Professor at the University of Lodz (Poland). LV is an expert in invasion biology and specializes in the risk analysis of invasive species. LV has a 25+ year research experience and is the author of more than 140 peer reviewed scientific papers dealing mainly with the ecology and management of aquatic invasive species. LV is the developer of the AS-ISK, TAS-ISK and TPS-ISK decision support tools, which are being used worldwide, and has been leading a large number of multinational collaborative research programmes on invasive species and risk analysis. Recently, LV has been running workshops (Malaysia, Philippines, Poland) on the risk screening of invasive species with the above decision support tools.

COURSE CONTENT

The course material (including both theory and practice) consists of 1100+ slides and will cover the following topics:

(i) Risk analysis – Background, rationale, history, scope and description of the components of risk analysis; Application of risk analysis to the environmental sciences; Origins and development of the risk analysis framework approach for non-native species.

(ii) Overview of research carried out so far in the risk screening of non-native species with the second-generation ISK toolkits (and its predecessors); Outcomes, breakthroughs and future topics and opportunities for investigation; Adoption of the second-generation ISK toolkits as a country-level 'gold-standard'.

(iii) Screening protocol – Identification of the assessors; Definition of the risk assessment area; Selection of species for screening; A priori categorisation of species invasiveness.

(iv) Screened species information – Compilation of database including all taxonomic and conservation status information; Four-step components of the a priori categorisation protocol.

(v) AS-ISK, TAS-ISK and TPS-ISK – History and development of the AS-ISK, TAS-ISK and TPS-ISK; Comprehensive description of the multilingual electronic decision support tools including their graphical user interface features, database format and requirements, and software capabilities to streamline the risk screening process;

(vi) Toolkits' multilingual capabilities and their relevance for local adoption and legislation (involving a brief description of the available suite of -ISK toolkits for the screening of both aquatic and terrestrial non-native species).

(vii) Statistical analysis – Implementation of receiver operating characteristic curve analysis for computation of a calibrated threshold; Species risk outcomes and ranking, and their classification for further investigation in the risk analysis process.

(viii) Preparation of peer-reviewed publications and reports; Presentation and communication

of results.
